Spring cleaning

Don’t forget about your mats during this year’s round of spring cleaning! From Zepfanman.com.

Spring is finally here, and with it the desire to do some serious spring cleaning. After you’ve dusted the corners you’ve ignored all winter, organized the kitchen, and taken stock of the belongings it’s time to part with, take a second to consider your mats. Is it time to replace mats that have been worn out over this long winter? Do you have all of the mats you need to keep your house as clean as possible (until next spring, that is)?

1. The kitchen mat.

The months you’ve spent in the kitchen, whipping up comfort foods to ward against the cold, have probably taken a toll on your kitchen mat. It has been the landing pad for countless spills, and at this point, you may not even recognize the whimsical design you picked out when you originally bought it. If you don’t have a kitchen mat, know that they are great ways to keep floors clean and keep you comfortable while you cook.

2. The welcome mat.

Can you still read the word “Welcome” on your welcome mat? Has it been worn away by dirt and snow from hundreds of pairs of winter boots? If so, it’s time to get a new one.

3. The outdoor mat.

To preserve the state of your brand new welcome mat, consider using a separate mat for wiping your feet and discarding your boots during rainy April. You should put this mat outside, at a backyard entrance, where function takes precedence over form.

4. The garden mat.

If for you, springtime means spending more time in your garden, note that there are a few ways to use mats here, too. There are porous mats with holes that allow sunlight and water to reach your plants while tamping down weeds, and, for a lower-tech application, use old mats (folded in half for more padding) to cushion knees as you tend to your plots.
