Four must-have car mats

In cars, mats are near-essential fixtures. Car mats, like other mats, keep surfaces clean and add to the durability of the areas they cover. Here are just four mats that will help you show as much respect for the interior of your car as you do for the interior of your home.

1. Floor Mats

Floor mats are easily the most important mats to have in your car. These mats, located in front of the car’s seats, trap the dirt and water that gets tracked in from outside. While most cars come with floor mats, it is important to replace the mats in your vehicle when they become too worn to be effective. Plus, the mats that come with your car are likely less durable than other floor mats on the market and thus less able to protect your car’s interior from long-term damage.

2. Cargo Mats

Cargo mats line the trunk or storage area of your car. You may not give this section of your car or truck much thought, but whether you’re toting groceries, athletic equipment, or luggage, the trunk can become dirty and damaged. Removable mats not only protect the car’s interior, but can be easily taken out and cleaned, keeping the rear interior of your car as tidy as the main cabin.

3. Car Kick Mats

As the name might suggest, these mats protect the car from kicks. More specifically, they protect the front seats from the kicking feet of children seated in back. Car Kick Mats, from new baby-focused company Freddie and Sebbie, come in packs of two and are designed to cover the seats of almost all cars. In a durable, black fabric, the mats hide scuffmarks, stains, and footprints and keep them from becoming permanent marks on your car’s interior.

4. Traction Mats

The snowy, icy, and generally terrible weather of late may mean there’s a greater likelihood of getting trapped in ice. If your car does end up stuck in a parking space, you can use a mat to get out. Place the mat under the wheels that are slipping and drive forward as much as you can. Continue to stop and adjust the mat placement as needed until you’ve inched your way onto the road. Using your floor mats will likely ruin them, so it’s a good idea to keep some inexpensive, rubber mats on hand during the winter months for this very purpose.
